23-11 No sailing, but a weekend of small chores

It was quite chilly this past weekend so we filled our time on the boat taking care of miscellaneous tasks. A sneak peak into a day of chores on the boat:

We wake up just as early on the weekends as we do the weekdays. This Saturday we had morning coffee and cooked oatmeal on Utopia before heading out for a long run. Our goal was to end the run the closest grocery store to the boat. As we approached the store, part of the concrete sidewalk caught on Jimmy’s shoe and down he went, scraping his knees in the fall. After a stunned moment, he got up and hobbled over to the grocery store where we purchased lunch for later in the day and batteries for the boat’s smoke detectors (I suppose they got a great workout on Feb. 21). We carried our groceries back to the boat, about ¾ mile or 1200 meters away. I had just enough time to clean up the bloody knees before our 10AM meeting with Janet, the woman working on our cockpit canvas.

Janet, Jimmy and I spent an hour wrangling to get all of the new cockpit side panels up with the old bimini system, discussing adjustments that may be needed. She left with an armful of canvas after we found more old zippers that needed to be replaced.

By then it was getting close to lunchtime which was followed by the two of us doing different sets of chores around the boat. This entails our taking turns on the computer, or moving out of the other’s way in our small space. For instance, I was trying to research suggestions for an improved first aid kit, when Jimmy decided to trouble shoot the wifi system on the boat… That research will just need to be done another day.

I moved on to organize the boat’s manuals, but realized I needed some materials that I did not have to do a decent job. At that moment, Jimmy happened to ask me a question about our USB cables which led me to end up organizing our jumble of cables. While I was there with notebooks and cables spread all over the my lap and settee, Jimmy said he needed to get into the lockers under the cushions I was sitting on. This required moving my workspace and materials to the other settee. Which funny enough later on Jimmy looked at me and said “oops, I need something from that locker too”.

Some chores from this weekend needed both of us to manage, like when re-hanging a shelf (we found it and its contents laying on the nav table when we arrived at the boat one weekend after we had given boat access to an electrician to come on board to prepare a quote for some work). The shelf was in an awkward location and required more than our four hands to do the job, but with tape and props we managed to get the shelf back up where it was.

Now it is later in the afternoon and time to put the disaster of a mess on the boat back together, and to get ourselves cleaned up before riding our bikes over to the next marina to meet up with some friends for dinner.

Our Sunday was spent doing more chores, like figuring out the details of our diesel tanks so that we might be able to order equipment to let us know the level in the tanks, polishing wood, and preparing the boat for Monday’s haul out.
