23-40 Quarterly Project Update (July - September)

Our nine months in St. Petersburg is coming to a close and it is time for a recap of projects we encountered during the last three months as we get closer to casting off. The number of projects for this quarter is surprisingly larger than I thought it would be when I posted the last quarterly update. but at least these items are not too major.

  • Order Boat Cards - these are like business cards, but boaters use them to share contact information.

  • New stern seatback cushions

  • Rebuilt Lavac pump - this toilet is no longer made, but Jimmy found a rebuild kit somewhere, and it worked!

  • Re-pickling of water maker - this was done early in this quarter and we expect to unpickle it after we point or bow south in November.

  • Cut wall between engine and lazarette to accommodate new wires - some small left over work from our battery conversion. After the new batteries went in, the door/wall between the engine and lazarette did not fit. A small cut was made and all is good now.

  • Replace bolts on backstay chain plates - we noticed one bolt head was missing. Past owner recommended we check/change all bolts. Half of the bolt heads broke off as soon as I put the wrench on them.

  • Improve dinghy lift plan - purchased new lifting strap and made other adjustments to attempt to removed twisting of lines and to eliminate potential rub points,

  • Re-reeve the stern dinghy pulley - a line slipped out of the block and I noticed that the reeving pattern was different than when when I last reeved it. My guess is that it was re-reeved at The Yacht Rigger. However after I reeved it the way I knew how to do it, I think The Yacht Rigger pattern is a better one. I have some research to do to try to find there pattern. Also considering purchasing third 6:1 block for bow now that the gasoline is stored up there making both sides of the dingy to be very heavy.

  • Test out new power supply system without shore power - we unplugged the boat while in the marina to see how the batteries managed our loads. So far it looks good, but some reach testing will take place later this month.

Installation of AC water pump
  • Air Conditioning Repair - Our air conditioner had seemed a little weak, and the amount of effluent from the unit seemed paltry compared to other boats. Labor Day weekend it made a very loud sound and stopped working. Jimmy did a bunch of trouble shooting, and thought it was the water pump. So we were very happy that once we installed a new pump the air conditioning fired up, has a lot of water discharge, and seems to keep our cabin a little cooler.

  • Hurricane Idalia Storm Prep - a few days after my foot surgery, Jimmy drove down to St. Pete alone to prepare the boat for the storm alone. Throughout the preparation process, I would call him to tell him that the storm has been upgraded to a stronger level requiring him to remove more stuff and to tie a lot more things down.

  • Repairs to dodger side curtains - the ties on the most aft part of the dodger side curtains failed during the hurricane allowing the curtains to flap around. As a result a lot of the stitching came undone. Our friend Cam offered use of his sewing machine to repair the curtains.

As for this next quarter, we have a few small projects in mind, many of which will be done after leaving the Harborage. These items are more maintenance related, like servicing wenches, fixing the Raritan head, testing battery system, giving the boat a good shakedown, and checking bolt heads on other chain plates. Our big "project" will be stowing away everything we bring to the boat as we give up our apartment.
